Talk to the Dentist about Composite Fillings

Composite fillings have become very popular over the years. Many people who aren’t comfortable with the mercury in amalgam fillings choose to have them replaced with composite fillings, which are a mixture of a resin and powdered glass. Composite fillings require less drilling than other types, since the composite forms itself to the shape of the cavity. However, the biggest reason for the popularity of composite fillings is the fact that the composite can be shaded to match the color of your tooth. For this reason, they are also sometimes referred to as tooth colored fillings.

In order to place a composite filling, our dentists, Drs. Kim and Chang will remove the decayed material, and then mix the composite to match the shade of your tooth. Then, the dentist will apply the composite in layers and will cure each layer as it is applied. This means that your composite filling may take longer to place than an amalgam filling. When the last layer has cured, the dentist will polish it. Polishing the filling will make it resistant to staining, but it can still become discolored over time by dark-colored food and drinks. If the filling becomes stained, or if it starts to wear away, the dentist can polish it, or add more layers to repair it.
