Stop Severe Tooth Decay with a Dental Crown

When left untreated, tooth decay will continue to spread over your teeth, and severe tooth decay can mean there is not enough healthy enamel for a dental filling. Our dentists may recommend a dental crown to repair severe tooth decay and restore your smile.

The first step in the process of placing a dental crown is for Dr. Kim and Dr. Chang to examine the tooth and taking dental X-rays to determine the extent of the decay and ensure the inner structures of the tooth is still healthy. If the tooth has decayed or infected pulp, it may require a root canal to provide enough healthy structure for a dental crown.

After the exam, your dentists will remove the tooth enamel, including the tooth decay, to create an abutment to support your new crown. We will then create an impression of the area, which is sent to a dental lab for the technicians to use as a guide in order to make your final crown. In the meantime, we will provide a temporary crown, which is a hard plastic cap, to protect your abutment.

When the dental lab has sent us your permanent crown, we will schedule a short second appointment with you to remove the temporary crown and cement your new permanent crown in place.
